Memories of Scarborough Campus

Althea Productions, 1995-2006

In the spring of 1995, graduates of what was then called the Drama program at the University of Toronto at Scarborough formed a theatre company dedicated to the exploration and production of varied, progressive and challenging theatre. We called ourselves U of T Scarborough Alumni Theatre. After a concerted campaign of outreach, the university welcomed us as an "on-campus" group, and the Leigha Lee Browne Theatre became our home.

Our inaugural production, Baggage, an original work by company member Conor Jones, was part of the 1996 Spring Reunion activities. Then, we tackled Shakespeare's Twelfth Night which we set in the Swinging Sixties featuring a live rock band. Our third show was a critically acclaimed production of Crimes of the Heart, which, once again, featured a saxophone solo on stage expressing the inner passion of the protagonist.

In 1998 we changed our name to Althea Productions. We combined "Alumni" and "Theatre" to get Althea, which was also a play on the Greek word for truth. From 1996 to 2006, Althea Productions mounted twenty shows, including an entry in the Toronto Summerworks Theatre festival, Rose Coloured Glasses, by company member H. Will Van der Zyl. We became ACT-CO members and won a "Thea" award for our production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Althea Productions celebrated Canadian theatre with shows like Norm Foster's The Melville Boys, John Murrell's Waiting for the Parade, Michel Tremblay's Les Belles Soeurs, the award-winning Covey Farm Road by local playwright Alice Walter and The Attic, The Pearls and Three Fine Girls by Jennifer Brewin, Martha Ross, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Alisa Palmer, and Leah Cherniak. We challenged ourselves and our audiences with ground-breaking and controversial plays such as House of Yes, The Vagina Monologues, Little Murders, Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, and The Death of Prince Hamlet, a pared-down version of Shakespeare's Hamlet set in the 1950's, underscored by jazz and the poetry of Allan Ginsberg.

Our final show was Neil Simon's The Odd Couple in 2006.
