Of the thousands of performances this theatre has seen – talks, readings, concerts, fashion shows, you name it – our research has documented over 300 full theatrical productions since it began operation as a theatre in the early 1970s. Most took place in the Leigha Lee Browne Theatre, but the Meeting Place also served as a venue for plays and variety shows put on by theatre students. One of the joys of this research was archiving show posters, a visual history of evolving tastes and technologies. This first poster, for what we believe to be the first theatrical performance on campus in 1966, advertised the then popular absurdist comedy A Resounding Tinkle and the medieval morality play Everyman. The Stage Wright digital archive features many more posters, which among other things displays diversification of the repertoire away from the male, white, Euro-American canon toward more diverse stories and aesthetics.
You can find our long and growing list of all historical theatre productions here.
